Kibira National Park lies atop the mountains of the Congo, Nile Divide and it is estimated that around 16% of the park consists of primary montane rainforest, the only montane forest in all of Burundi, and is adjacent to two large tea plantations, one in Teza and the other in Rwegura. The park also has 98 mammal species and about 10 diverse primate species are recorded.
Kibira National Park has 231 bird species of which 21 are endemic to Albertine Rift, 13 are listed on IUCN red list. The park is home for birds such as Great Blue Turaco, Mountain Buzzard (Buteooreophilus), White-spotted Flufftail (Sarothrurapulchra), Grey Parrot(Psittacuserithacus), Bar-tailed Trogon (Apalodermavittatum)and the Black-and-white-casqued Hornbill(Bycanistessubcylindricus).

Bururi forest reserve is rich with variety of 205 bird species, 6 species are at the IUCN red list and 12 species are endemic to Albertine Rift and 36 belong to Afrotropical Highlands biome like Dusky Turtle-dove, mountain Buzzard Buteo, Cinnamon-chested bee- eater, Montane nightjar, Ruwenzori batis-batis, scarce swift, fine banded woodpecker, white-tailed crested - flycatcher and many others that have their homes in the reserve.
