Rusizi National Park is also referred to as Parc National de la Rusizi and the park is sectioned into two significant areas which are separated by the Bujumbura -Uvira road. Rusizi National Park is located 15km the north-west of Bujumbura, a few kilometers to the border with Democratic Republic of Congo. The Bujumbura - Uvira highway crosses the park, dividing the park into two sections. Rusizi National Park Burundi can be accessed through various routes and Roads, as it can be accessed by road and airline basing from Democratic republic of Congo Bukavu or Rwanda or via Airlines to Burundi International airport in Bujumbura the capital city. Rusizi National Park is the most well-known National park in Burundi and the most visited of all due to the most enriched wildlife and the Crocodiles on River Rusizi.

The larger part of the park is lies on the eastern bank of Rusizi River. This flood plain is 2kilometers wide and 45kilometers long with acacia trees, shrubs and grasslands dominating the wild vegetation. The dry season is June to September and is practically the best time to have safari walks although wild fires are common. The rainy season takes on for the rest of the year since the country lies in tropical Central Africa. More than 226 bird species have been registered and 10 of them are on the IUCN red list. There is only one species of pitta. Cuckooshrikes are small, greyish birds with distinctive head patterns.

The flamingo is a species of wading bird native to Burundi It has a short tail and slender legs, as well as a thick, down-turned bill. Pigeons occur throughout the world, they are found as well in Burundi Grebes are large, diving birds from Burundi, Tanzania, and Rwanda. The stout-bodied Burundian rockfowl are distinctive in appearance, and they are often considered a species of waterbird. Barn-owls are solitary nocturnal birds that are similar to eagles and hawks.

Rusizi National Park has a number of routes and roads that travellers can use to get to the park. Rusizi Park can also be accessed by air. The best way to get to Rusizi Park however, is by a 4 Wheel Drive for it gives travellers an opportunity to explore the countryside extensively. The Bujumbura - Uvira highway dissects the park into two sections, making it an easily accessible tourist destination. Visitors generally fly into Burundi International airport in Bujumbura and make their way from there to the reserve.
