This is an extinct volcano with shared borders of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, and Uganda. The shared border point occurs at the peak area at a height of 3,669meters. This is also the location where the three protected areas of Mgahinga Gorilla National Park (Uganda), Volcanoes National Park (Rwanda), and the Virunga National Park (DR Congo) all join together.

Mount Sabinyo, 3645m, also spelled sabyinyo is an extinct volcano in Eastern Africa has three peaks. Sabyinyo a local Kinyarwanda word that comes from the word Iryinyo, meaning tooth, at times referred to as Sabinio. The Mountain carries the local nickname Old Man's Teethbecause its serrated summit resembles worn teeth in a gum. Mt Sabinyo is found in three countries; west of Lake Bunyonyi in Uganda, northeast of Lake Kivu in Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Its peak lies at 3,645 meters above sea level at the meeting point of the borders marking the intersection of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, and Uganda. It also lies within the adjoining national parks established by these countries to protect the mountain gorillas: Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda.

Mt Sabinyo is one of the numerous rolling volcanoes that make up the magnificent Virunga mountain range. The slopes of Mount Sabyinyo are a habitat for the endangered Mountain Gorillas. In Uganda, Mount Sabinyo is located within Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in the southwestern corner of the country. The Sabinyo's slopes that has many craters with sharp ridges, the mountain cannot be trekked in the other two countries except in Uganda where they have managed to work out a safe challenging trail that includes improvising handmade ladders to assist climbers at very steep sections.

Mount Sabinyo requires 2 days, one day hike and the round trek is 8 hours, 4 hours to the summit and 4 hours back, depending on the pace, weather, etc. Hiking activity sets off from the park office after meeting with and briefing by the ranger guide. Walking sticks are provided for free as well the porters are available for hire. Wildlife in the park includes Buffaloes, Elephants and Gorillas but is rarely seen on the trail. This is also habitat for the Golden Monkeys which you are chanced at seeing This is also territory of the famous Rwenzori Turaco, a stunning bird which is also endemic to the Albertine rift region.

What you need to bring for the Mount Sabyinyo Hike

Hiking shoes, Long-sleeved shirt and trouser to protect from itchy plants e.g. stinging nettles. Rain gear, i.e. rain coat. Stockings, hat for warmth. Garden gloves for cold weather at the top.Lunch and snacks
