The Ntokou-Pikounda National Park is a 4,572 square km large protected area in the Republic of the Congo. The park is located 555 km Northeastern part of the main capital Brazzaville. The main aim of the park is to protect the lowland gorilla population who lives here. The park was founded on December 28, 2012. The park also houses 950 chimpanzees, 8,000 forest elephants, and more. As a way to help ensure the park protection from human interruption, few tourist services are offered here.
The second protected area to be created in 2012, the Ntokou Pikounda lies southeast of Odzala Kokoua National Park, which is well-known for one of the highest gorilla populations in the world.Along with great apes, this mosaic of swamp forest, clearings, and mixed forests region contains elephants, chimpanzees, crocodiles, hippos, as well as rare and threatened birds such as crowned eagles and many species of hornbills.
The Ntokou-Pikounda forest will be a stronghold for great apes and forest elephants. There is already a great deal of local community support for the creation of both these protected areas. We look forward to working with the Congolese Government in making these effective protected areas and foundations for landscape scale management in the Congo basin.
The park has permanent freshwater rivers and lakes bordered by marshes, trees, plants, and ponds. The different habitat types support a wide biodiversity, which includes numerous IUCN Red-listed species such as the Hippopotamus, African elephant, Western lowland gorilla, and Central Chimpanzee. The location provides a haven for various migrating waterbirds, as well as over 180 fish and plant species of high economic significance to the local community, who gathers and sell non-timber forest products and engage in subsistence gardening, fishing, and hunting. It is critical for sustaining the Congo basin's overall hydrological balance and guaranteeing ground water recharge. In addition to its economic and hydrological worth, it has significant cultural, historical, and religious significance for the local community. The new park contains a gorilla-rich remote swamp dubbed the “Green Abyss” by WCS researchers who conducted wildlife surveys there.

Wildlife viewing
The park contains an estimated 15,000 gorillas, 800 elephants, and 950 chimpanzees. The new park adds to Congo's impressive list of protected areas that safeguard large populations of gorillas and wide expanses of pristine habitat.Enjoy seeing the African savanna elephants as they enjoy a bath in the Ntokou Pikounda National park, located deep in the Congo Basin of Africa. The male sprays himself all over with mud, which not only cools him off, but the mud also traps ticks and other skin parasites.
A group of females and their young follow closely behind where they bathe in and drink the mud. This particular spot has salt in the mud, an important mineral for elephants that they do not get through other food sources. The elephants know where all of these salty mud holes are in the forest and come back to them generation after generation.
