BIRDING IN ETOSHA NATIONAL PARK

Namibia is located along the continent's south-western coast. Namibia is perhaps best known for the similarly-named large desert that occupies much of this arid country called the Namib Desert. The country is popular for its tasty oysters, vast diamond reserves, and its superb wildlife. Namibia is sparsely populated inland, friendly people, and ease of traveling. Namibia is bordered by Angola, Zambia, Botswana and the Atlantic Ocean. Although it is the most arid country in sub-Saharan Africa, Namibia boasts an immense collection of nature reserves and protected areas that harbor a wide array of wildlife, including all of southern Africa's big game mammals.

Etosha National Park is one of the country's most noticeable reserves and draws guests from far and wide with its superb game viewing which you would be hard-pressed to beat anywhere in the world. Birdwatching in Namibia is equally excellent; despite the country having only one true endemic it has a great many near-endemics shared with South Africa, Botswana, or Angola. The dry nature of the country makes for very easy birding, and Namibia is a long-time favorite among avid birders. One of the key reasons why birders visit Namibia is to see the stunning, localised bird species that occur only in arid northern Namibia and southern Angola.

These include really beautiful birds such as Cinderella Waxbill Glaucestrilda thomensis, Rockrunner Achaetops pycnopygius, White-tailed Shrike Lanioturdus torquatus, Bare-cheeked Babbler Turdoides gymnogenys, Monteiro's Hornbill Tockus monteiri and the charismatic eponymous Herero Chat Namibornis Herero among a host of others. Fewer people realize that the Caprivi Strip of Namibia is a dazzling place to see the birds of the greater Okavango Delta including Pel's Fishing Owl Scotopelia peli, Slaty Egret Egretta vinaceigula, Chirping Cisticola Cisticola pipiens, Greater Swamp Warbler Acrocephalus rufescens, a plethora of incredibly colourful kingfisher species as well as bee-eaters such as the wonderful Southern Carmine Bee-eater Merops nubicoides. On any birding trip to Namibia, it's also very easy to cross the border into Botswana to spend a couple of nights in the Okavango proper.

While the country possesses just one spot-on endemic (Dune Lark, a Namib special); an auxiliary host of near-endemics extend only marginally into remote Angola, are most easily found in Namibia. These include Rüppell's, Korhaan Gray's Lark and Herero Chat in the Namib desert, and escarpment specials such as White-tailed Shrike, Hartlaub's Francolin, Violet Woodhoopoe, Rockrunner, Rüppells Parrot, Carp's Black Tit and Bare-cheeked Babbler.

The Cunene River basin in far northern Ovamboland is possibly the best place in the world to find the romantically-named Cinderella Waxbill, and in the southern African region Grey Kestrel and Rufous-tailed Palm Thrush are found only here. Heading eastwards, the moist Caprivi Strip offers easy access to Okavango specials such as Slaty Egret, as well as terrific woodland birding including Sharp-tailed Starling.

The coast has abundant waders and shorebirds, pelicans and herons not to mention Damara Tern and Cape Fur Seals at Walvis Bay Wetlands. Here too are African Black Oystercatcher, Hartlaub's Gull, South African Shelduck, Cape Cormorant, Cape Gannet, White-fronted Plover, Chestnut-banded Plover and Terek Sandpiper.
