Mount Muhavura also known as Muhabura is the highest peak at 4,127m, and this 12km round trip takes around eight hours. Seen from all over Kisoro, this volcano acts as a guide. The typical cone shaped Mountain provides some of the best views in the country. Much of the climb passes a rocky surface covered by grasses and small shrubs. This extinct mountain is the steepest of all the 8 Virunga Volcanoes. Once at the top, hikers are rewarded with the view of the Virunga volcanoes, Lake Edward in queen Elizabeth National Park, Bwindi and the peaks of Rwenzori Mountain. The hike takes approximately 8 hours round trip covering 12 kilometers. You are advised to camp at the Muhavura base camp the night before the site has no facilities so you need a tent, water, food and sleeping gear. Unlike Mount Sabyinyo that can only be climbed from the Uganda side, Mount Muhabura can be climbed from both Uganda and Rwanda.
Climbing Mount Muhabura usually takes 5-6 hours depending on the pace of hiking but it also requires tourists to be physically fit. The hike is divided into two stops (each with a hut) before reaching the summit. The first stop is at 3116 meters/10223 feet above sea level and the second one being at 3855 meters/12648 feet above sea level. The climax/peak of the climb is at 4,127 meters/13,450 feet above sea level. The peak is cold and misty but because of the climb, you might get attracted to swim in the Crater Lake.
Tourists can book for the permits in advance (though not very necessary) or even on the day of hiking/climbing. Hikers report to Ntebeko Visitor Center by 7am in Uganda or at the Park headquarters at Kinigi in Rwanda for pre-hiking briefing. The hike is conducted in the company of tour guides and armed rangers to protect tourists from wild animals like Elephants and buffaloes, which are scared by shooting in the air. The Uganda Wildlife Authority fees for climbing any of the Virunga Mountains in Uganda i.e. Mount Mgahinga, Mount Sabinyo or Mount Muhavura is as follows;
Foreigner non-residents is USD 80
Foreign residents is USD 70
Ugandan Nationals is UGX 50,000
This fee includes the hiking fees and the guide fee but excludes the fee of hiring a porter. Porters charge about USD 15 per day.
