Basilique Sainte Anne

Basilica of Saint Anne of the Congo

The Basilique Sainte Anne is one of Brazzaville's most magnificent architectural works. The Basilica sits 400 meters from the city's main station, on the junction of Avenue de L'Indépendance and Avenue de la Paix. A stadium and a small park are owned by the Basilica. The structure's most prominent characteristics are its pointed arches and green roof. It is one of the most prominent Catholic shrines in the city.

Roger Erell, a Protestant French architect, designed this stunning Catholic chapel in 1943. Brazzaville was the formal capital of Free France at the time, the government-in-exile led by Charles de Gaulle that fought Hitler long after France had fallen. The basilica was envisioned as a powerful and conspicuous symbol of Free France's authority. It wasn't dedicated until 1949, some years after the war ended, and even then, it was still under construction. The bell tower's spire was ultimately completed in 2011.

To establish a place of prayer for the city's worshipers, the tower mixes modernist architecture, classic Gothic design, and Congolese iconography. The structure is light and has a cave-like appearance, which enhances the effect of the skylight. It is a significant place of worship for Catholics in Brazzaville and the Republic of Congo. Every year, The Basilique, one of the city's most well-known and visited attractions, witnesses very crowded perspectives.

Its emerald green tile roof is believed to resemble snake scales. These scales, like the gargoyles engraved on the façades of medieval cathedrals, are indicative of the evil that exists outside the church. Every morning at 6:30 a.m., mass is held, while the major mass is celebrated on Sundays at 10:30 a.m.
