Bangweulu Swamps between Serenje and Samfya is the place for Shoebills, several camps and other good birding spots nearby e.g. Kasanka and Lavushi Manda National Parks. Other birds include: Denham's Bustard, Common Bittern, White-cheeked Bee-eater, Rosy-breasted Longclaw, Wattled Crane, Swamp Flycatcher. Luapula River that flows out of the Bangweulu system, accessed at Mukuku Bridge on the Kalasa Mukoso Flats with their spectacular spire-shaped termite mounds has birds like Rosy-throated Longclaw, weaver nests, Holub's Golden Weaver, Katanga Masked Weaver. Other birds of note were Long-tailed Widowbird (in full breeding plumage), Chirping Cisticola and various waterbirds.
Marsh Tchagra, Greater Swamp Warbler, Angola Swallow, Little Rush Warbler, Zambian Yellow Warble,r Papyrus Yellow Warbler, Black-headed Weaver, Swamp Flycatcher, Lesser Jacana, African Pygmy Goose, Little Rush Warbler, White-winged Swamp Warbler and African Swamphen. Back on shore the highlights include Black-faced Canary, Red-cheeked Cordon-bleu, Collared Palm Thrush, Dickinson's Kestrel, a flock of about 200 Kantanga Masked Weavers that showed no sign of breeding plumage.
From Nchelengego to north-east to the Mbala area, pause every now and again and look at the roadside miombo woodland or floodplain grassland and finding the likes of Black necked Eremomela, Collared Flycatcher, Black Coucal, Miombo Pied Barbet, Rufous-bellied Tit, Striped Pipit, Cinnamon-breasted Bunting, Tanzanian Masked Weaver and a fine male Oustalet's Sunbird.
