Odzala-Kokoua National Park is located in north-western Congo Brazzaville, covers 13,500 kilometers squared, was originally protected in 1935, made a biosphere reserve in 1977, and was formally designated in 2001. It is managed by African Parks and the Ministry of Forest Economy, Sustainable Development and the Environment, and its tourist concession is managed by the Congo Conservation Company (CCC). Odzala Kokoua National Park is one of Africa's oldest national parks located in the middle of the Congo Basin, the world's second biggest rainforest after the Amazon.

The Congo Basin covers more than two million square kilometers and is home to 18% of the world's surviving rainforest. Despite the fact that humans have occupied the area for over 50,000 years, it remains one of the most ecologically varied and species-rich locations on the globe, while the basin provides clean water, food, and shelter to more than 75 million people.

To safeguard this internationally renowned park, African Parks signed a 25-year agreement with the Republic of the Congo's Ministry of Forest Economy, Sustainable Development, and Environment in 2010. The government confirmed their management agreement in 2020, expanding the cooperation for the remaining 15 years of its life and including the Lossi Gorilla Sanctuary, after 10 years of good management and recognizing Odzala-Kokoua's ecological and socio-political worth.

Lossi, a 380 square kilometer area south of Odzala Kokoua, contributes to major wildlife corridors in the region. The Odzala Kokoua-Lossi Foundation was founded by Odzala Kokoua and Lossi to maintain one of Africa's most biodiverse environments, involving people, and ensuring natural resources are protected for future generations. While bushmeat poaching remains a continual concern within the park, our highly trained law enforcement squad, together with education and conservation based community entrepreneurship possibilities, has managed to stabilize unlawful activity. Odzala has become a beacon in the forest, not only for its plentiful and valuable species, but also for the people who see the need of preserving this area.

Flora and Fauna

The park itself is home to 4,500 plant and tree species, and is composed of several ecosystems, including wet and dry forest, and savannah habitats. The forest is largely open canopy Marantaceae, though it includes closed canopy Marantaceae and terra firme forest.

The Odzala-Kokoua savannas are home to grazers like as buffalo, bushbuck, and Grimms' duiker. Buffalo, forest elephant, big forest hog, and gorilla may also be found in the park's woods. De Brazza's monkey, Angolan talapoin, mantled guereza, and Tana River mangabey are among the primates that live in the marshy woodlands. There are also hippo, dwarf forest crocodiles, and slender-snouted crocodiles in the park's waterways. Along with the animals and reptiles, there are some spectacular birds.

Odzala-Kokouais a home to over 100 mammals, to 440 species of bird, and too many species of reptile, amphibian, fish, and insect. Some remarkable birds include White crested tiger-heron, black dwarf hornbill, chestnut wattle-eye, lyre-tailed honey guide. For avid birders, the park surely has a lot of interest. Don't forget to bring your binoculars!

Odzala Kokoua National Park is known for its diversity, and in particular for being home to an extraordinary number of primate species. As well as the western lowland gorilla, for which it is famous, these include: chimpanzee, Angolan talapoin, two species of mangabey, moustached guenon, DrBrazza's monkey, crested mona monkey, and mantled guereza. Other prominent species of mammal include forest elephant, bongo, buffalo, two types of forest hog, several types of antelope, and sitatunga. Less abundant species include leopard, spotted hyena, serval and African golden cat. Birdlife is absolutely legion.

Activitives at this park

Boat safaris depart from Ngaga, Lango, and Mboko camps.

You go on woodland treks as well as boat excursions to attempt to locate Other mammals include forest duikers, forest buffalo, harnessed bushbuck, forest elephant, spotted hyena, bongo, red river hog, western Sitatunga, and their birds, which include African grey parrots, green pigeons, great blue turacos, blue-casqued wattled hornbills, and reptiles like slender-snouted crocodiles and African dwarf crocodiles.

Lango Camp is comparable to Mboko in that you may take leisurely pirogue rides down the river, drive into the savannah, and go for walks along the bai. Some of these activities may include wading across streams and bais and calmly waiting to see what will happen.

Odzala Kokoua National Park wildlife watching

The activities available at Lango Camp include a stroll in the bai in front of the camp, for which you should be prepared to get wet! Walking through the clean water in your river shoes or old trainers/sneakers is ideal footwear. River rides in steel boats with engines carry you down the Lekoli River in search of mustache or putty-nosed monkeys and a variety of birds. Safari rides in 4WD vehicles are available, as are treks in the savannah and river forest areas. Several elevated hides have been erected to improve animal viewing (forest elephants). The park also has a wonderful diversity of creatures.

While tracking gorillas is the apparent highlight, other species like as forest elephants, forest buffalo, bongo, Sitatunga, and chimps can also be observed. There are also an estimated 430 bird species and various primates, including the Guerezacolobus, grey-cheeked mangabey, and mustached monkey.

Trekking with the Western Lowland Gorillas

At Ngaga Camp, you'll focus on tracking western lowland gorillas with the help of a professional guide and native tracker. You have two trek options, with a third (at an additional expense) available. You may also visit Ombo village from Ngaga to learn about the lives of the people who live in this immense forest. There are two habituated groups of western lowland gorillas in the forest, as well as other primates such as the crowned monkey, mustached monkey, black and white colobus, grey-cheeked mangabey, and putty-nosed mangabey.

Gorilla Trekking can begin in Ngaga Camp, which is centered on hikes to visit habituated Western lowland gorillas. Each visitor has two opportunities to track gorillas, both of which take place in the mornings - tourists are generally backed up in time for lunch. This leaves the afternoon open for a stroll in the forest or a visit to the adjacent Ombo settlement. Ngaga also has amazing night treks that provide a completely different view on the area.

Access to the park is usually by air, a two-hour flight from Brazzaville, though the super-adventurous may want to try the 15-hour road trip. Tourists are accommodated at the park's three camps, all of which are excellent, and provide base for a range of different experiences. Ngaga Camp is also home to the pioneering gorilla research of Dr Magda Berejemo and German Illera.

Odzala is accessible by car or air from Brazzaville. All visitors to Odzala must first go to Brazzaville to pass immigration and customs procedures. Visitors who want a visa must first get a letter of invitation (LOI) issued by Congolese immigration officials and stamped with their official stamp. The Congo Conservation Company will draft an invitation letter and assist with the permission procedure.

There are various ways to get to the Odzala Discovery Camps from Brazzaville, but the quickest and most convenient is by plane. Every Thursday, CCC organizes a weekly departure that coincides to the Odzala Discovery 7-night itinerary. On the charter flight, guests may check in one 23kg bag.

A bespoke private charter flight to or from Odzala might be arranged for passengers requesting an alternative route. The other choices include via road, including self-driving (this option is only available to Congolese residents who own a 4 x 4 car). If you are interested in this option, please inquire first.

Otherwise, the camps may be reached by road on the 26-seat Toyota Coaster bus that runs from Brazzaville to Etoumbi, where the tar road terminates. After Etoumbi, take a pontoon barge across the Likouala-Moussaka River and proceed on the laterite road through the forest to the Camps in one of the game viewers. The road journey is lengthy (14 hours), but it gives a unique viewpoint as one travels through the varied vistas of the Congolese countryside.

Frequently Asked Questions About Odzala Kokoua National Park

Dry season (December through February and June through September)

The lack of rain can make the air hazy, but humidity levels are lower than during the rainy seasons. Because of the abundance of ripe fruits, gorillas frequently eat in the trees, making it easy to monitor their behavior and relationships. The numerous wildlifeis usually easier to see in the bias since they are closer to the water streams at this season.

Wet season (March through May and September through November)

Congo is located near the equator, therefore temperatures fluctuate relatively little year round. There are two wet seasons and two dry seasons throughout the year. Photographers frequently love the light and colorful sky created by tropical storms during the rainy season.
